I have to think about this. My hunch offhand is that you should read new materials only if they are relevant to your work, not just in order to have credibility for others in discussion groups. There's virtue in saying I don't know. Better still is, " I don't know that. Can you please try to explain it ins reasonably accessible terms, as I'm not a specialist?" If they're open-minded and care about your ideas they should understand that, like everybody, you have strengths but also limitations. I would also ask myself, "are these people providing me with helpful feedback or good ideas of their own which are relevant to my interests?" Relevance is the key to selecting what to read or learn in this finite lifespan. One can't study every discipline.
